On March 15, 2016, Kennedy-Zapata Elementary School hosted a ceremony in the school library to induct 43 students (in grades 3-5), into the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS). Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina led the honorees in reciting the pledge as proud parents and school staff looked on.

The National Elementary Honor Society is one of the most prestigious honors that can be awarded to an elementary student. The society honors students who have excelled in five areas: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Citizenship, and Character. The aforementioned are determined through student activities, volunteering, and teacher evaluations.

All students have also maintained a minimum of 85 in the subject areas of Language, Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies. Principal Thelma J. Martinez said that she was very proud of the new inductees. “I would like to share a congratulatory message with our parents and family members. Their support is invaluable because they play a key role in the social, personal and academic development of their children”, said Martinez
