Last Home Game Set to Bring Awareness for the American Cancer Society

LAREDO, TEXAS – The #1 Laredo Swarm will end their basketball season with an American Cancer Society Awareness Night, and they invite the public to show their support by WEARING PURPLE on Sunday, February 28 at 4:00 p.m. at the Laredo Energy Arena (LEA).

“We are very excited to promote our event and organization at the LEA with the Laredo Swarm,” said 13 year breast cancer survivor and American Cancer Society Event Leader Laura Nañez. “We are hoping to have a good showing from our community for a worthwhile cause.”

The American Cancer Society’s goals are to raise awareness of the services the non-profit organization provides along with donations for medical research and expenses.

Being a cancer survivor, Nañez said she has benefited from the American Cancer Society’s research and medication that is funded by the organization.

A former teacher from Cigarroa High School (CHS), Nañez has been involved with the Relay for Life for 10 years, where she’s served as an Event Leader for two years and as team captain for the Torro Family and Friends from CHS.

The Relay for Life is an organized, overnight community fundraising walk which teams of people camp out around a track. Members of each team take turns walking around the track. Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie. This event is a family-friendly environment for the entire community.

During Sunday’s game, the American Cancer Society will be promoting their Relay for Life, set for Friday, April 22 – Saturday, April 23 at UISD Student Activity Complex.

Sunday’s attendees will have the opportunity to join the American Cancer Society committee, receive 2016 team captain information, sign up as a survivor and/or caregiver, purchase a luminaria and become a sponsor.

Last year’s Relay for Life, they surpassed the amount of participants by recruiting a total of 77 teams. Their goal this year is to recruit 90 teams.

“We invite all of Laredo to show their support on Sunday, February 28 and wear purple,” said Marlon Minifee, Laredo Swarm Owner. “Let’s unite as a community and slam dunk cancer!”

Individual tickets for the last game of the Laredo Swarm basketball season start at just $5. Fans can enjoy the Swarm Family 4 Pack, which includes four tickets, four hotdogs, and four fountain drinks, for only $30. Adults 21 years of age and over can keep spirited with $2 – 12oz draft beer (Restrictions Apply).

The Laredo Swarm are currently ranked FIRST PLACE in the American Basketball Association (ABA) League (18-1).
