(Laredo, Texas)-Surrounded by veterans representing various branches of the U.S. military, students, faculty, and staff at Veterans Memorial Elementary School held their official school dedication ceremony Thursday morning. The event took place in a packed gymnasium and was moderated by Carmen Rendon and Alex S. Meyer of the United ISD Communications Office. Featured at the event was the school choir, which entertained the audience with their patriotic songs, as well as a video produced by Instructional Television, which showed students and staff members enjoying their new school surroundings.
The dedication ceremony marked the opening of the District’s 27th elementary campus. The new campus is the first of five elementary schools constructed with bond monies approved by voters in 2013.
“It is with great pride that we formally dedicate this campus,” said United ISD Superintendent Roberto J. Santos. “This is a state-of-the art facility where our students will be able thrive.”
The name for the campus was determined by a volunteer committee that consisted of students, parent volunteers, district-wide administrators, and citizens at large from the boundary areas of Prada, Perez, and Roosevelt Elementary Schools.
“Veterans Memorial serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by men and women who heeded the call to defend our Country here and abroad,” said Superintendent Santos. “Our veterans continue to serve as role models for future generations of students. We thank and salute all our past, present, and future veterans for their contributions to our nation and our community,” he added.
In addition to veterans, many city, county, and state leaders were in attendance. United ISD Board President Javier Montemayor, Jr. congratulated the students, principal, teachers, and staff members at the official opening of the campus and also reminded the audience to give thanks to the brave soldiers who struggled to preserve the liberties we enjoy today.
U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar’s Office presented the school with a Commemorative U.S. Flag that will be prominently displayed at the campus. State Representative Tracy O. King presented the school with a Texas flag and offered congratulatory remarks to all in attendance.
The event concluded with a performance from the school choir and the Lamar Bruni Vergara Middle School Jaguar Band. Students then led a veterans and guests on a patriotic parade through the campus halls and enjoyed light refreshments.
