(Laredo, Texas)-After school music programs help students discover and nurture the gift of music and encourage each student to grow in a structured and supportive environment.
At present, Killam Elementary school’s Guitar Club has over 100 members, and is comprised of two groups that meet twice a week. Fourth and fifth grade students meet once a week, and this year, lessons were opened to second and third grade students.
The Guitar Club is headed by Killam’s lead music teacher Ramon Godines, who says that his students enjoy the classes and are always eager to learn new music and playing techniques. “
As an elementary music teacher I am very grateful for the opportunity and support provided by our administration. Our Principal, Mr. Palizo, has been very helpful to the program and has even sat in and played guitar with the kids. Our Assistant Principals, Mrs. Cantu and Mrs. Escamilla are also very encouraging and supportive as well. The opportunity to learn guitar and create music gives students a unique and rewarding way to explore their creativity”, says Godines.
