New Contract Means Energy Savings for UISD

On July 28, 2015 UISD took a pivotal step towards saving money on electricity when it signed on to a cost saving five year (60 month), contract with Houston based MP2 Energy. The top-tier power company manages power plants, delivers electricity to end-use customers, and masters all other aspects of the power markets. The new agreement between Mp2 and UISD is effective on January 1, 2016.

The new rate per Kilowatt Hour (KWH) offered by MP2 $0.04361. The District’s current rate is $0.0704, for an estimated savings of $0.02679 per KWH.

The estimated KWH usage for the first year is expected to be 60,805,134 KWH, and is projected to grow to 83,011,026 KWH by the fifth year of the contract, due to the construction of new schools and facilities.

The cost of electricity at all new UISD construction sites will also be priced in accordance with the lower contract rate offered by MP2. The estimated savings for the first year of the contract is $1,628,969.54, and is projected to grow to a savings of 8 million dollars over the five year life of the contract. “We are always looking for ways to lower expenditures on energy costs and reallocate savings to areas that further the Districts’ educational objectives”, said UISD Assistant Superintendent for Administration Mike Garza.
