United High School Chess Team Takes National Honors At Competition

(Laredo, Texas)-On February 14, 2015 the United High school Chess team traveled to Kingsville, Texas to compete at the Region 7 Scholastic Chess Tournament. The UHS Team placed 2nd and went on to compete at the 2015 Texas High School Chess Championships, held in March 28 and 29at the McAllen Convention Center. There the team came back with 5 individual trophies, all in the top twenty category, and the 1st Place Team Trophy in the Junior Varsity Division.
On April 8, the Chess players traveled to Columbus, Ohio to compete at the National Scholastic Chess Championships. In the U800 section, the students received a 9th place team trophy out of the 47 teams who competed. In the U1200 section, students placed 16out of 61 teams who competed. Both Junior Varsity and Varsity teams placed in the top 20 category.
“I’m very proud that both of the junior varsity and varsity teams placed in the top 20 at national competition,” said United High School Chess sponsor Lucy K Gutierrez. “These students work hard to prepare with each chess match and I’m very proud of them.”

Reyna, Fernando S. Martinez, James Reyna, Victor Martinez, Omar Santos and Jonathan Rodriguez
The Sponsor and the UHS Chess Team were recently recognized by the United ISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent for their national level accomplishment.
