(Laredo, Texas)-With Memorial Day just around the corner, Cm. Vela and other patriotic-minded individuals in Laredo would like to invite the community to help prepare the Veterans’ Section of the City of Laredo Cemetery with a Clean-Up event, set for Saturday, May 23, 2015, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

“It is my absolute honor to be able to host this clean-up initiative for our fallen heroes,” said Cm. Vela.  “I sincerely hope the community can come be a part of this effort, so that the Veterans’ Section looks amazing and is a fitting tribute for the Memorial Day ceremony.”

Thanks to Gamboa, who has not only been instrumental in organizing this clean-up event, but is also donating a pallet of sod grass to place at the grave site of her father, his comrades and the surrounding grave sites, this is a labor of love for her to let the families of these military heroes know that they are not forgotten.  Gamboa is also soliciting donations for more sod grass, trees and other items for the clean-up.

Anyone wishing to volunteer can sign up by calling the City of Laredo Parks Department at 795-2350. Volunteers should bring hats, sunscreens and any garden tools; pickers will be provided to help pick-up grass.  Water and lunch, provided by Cm. Vela, will be given to all volunteers.

For donations of materials and supplies, please contact Clarissa Rangel at the City of Laredo Parks Department, as well.  Volunteers can receive service credit hours, as well.

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in the month of May and honors those who lost their lives while in the military service.  The Laredo Memorial Day Ceremony will be held on Monday, May 25, 2015, at 9 AM.
