Famed Author Lectures at UISD High Schools

(Laredo, Tx)-During the week of February 23, Author Matt de La Peña visited all five UISD high school campuses to discuss how he became an avid reader, and his beginnings as a writer of poetry and novels. To date, the author has written six critically-acclaimed young adult novels (including Mexican WhiteBoy, The Living and The Hunted) and two award-winning picture books (A Nations Hope and Last Stop on Market Street).

author Matt received his MFA in creative writing from San Diego State University and his B.A. from the University of the Pacific, where he studied psychology and English while on a full basketball scholarship. He currently resides in Brooklyn, N.Y., and teaches creative writing when not touring high schools and colleges throughout the nation. Special thanks to the TAMIU Gear Up IV program for coordinating the author’s lectures with UISD lead librarian Carmen Escamilla,( A.H.S.) and fellow high school librarians Raquel Ramon, (L.B.J.); Nidia Rodriguez, (U.H.S.); Lety Moncivais, (U.H.S. 9th grade campus), and Griselda Gonzalez, (U.S.H.S.)
