(Laredo, Tx)-“National Wear Red Day” is February 6, according to the American Heart Association (AHA), heart disease and stroke kills 1 in 3 women every year. This is why, the United Independent School District, will be wearing a special AHA red shirt or red blouse tomorrow to help raise awareness of the disease that continues to be the #1 health threat for females. Students, faculty and staff members may choose to participate in this special designation.
“This is a great opportunity to reach out to women, and men, in our District and alert them to their personal risk factors for heart disease. Together, we can raise awareness about heart disease and help lead all on the path to prevention,” said United ISD Wellness Coordinator Michelle Silva.
In addition to the red shirts, employees will be wearing a special red dress pin, a national symbol for women and heart disease awareness introduced in 2002. It delivers an urgent wakeup call to women stating that it doesn’t care what you wear…heart disease is the #1 killer of women.
“We must take action and reduce our risk. We need to change the perception that it is only a man’s issue,” Silva added.
“We hope that awareness about heart disease and its risk factors, motivates employees to take action to prevent the heart disease.” said United ISD Superintendent Roberto J. Santos.
United ISD invites the community to show their support by wearing something red—a red sweater or scarf—and encourage neighbors, coworkers, friends and loved ones to do the same.
