(Laredo, Tx)-During the month of February, Mr. Sinneh J. Koroma, Jr., Assistant Principal at United South High School and Ms. Carolyn Schmies, Speech Professor at Laredo Community College, spoke to groups of students about the significance of Black History Month.

Mr. Koroma discussed aspects of the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965, which helped bring about the Voting Rights Act. Ms. Schmies discussed the role of women in black history, as well as her experience as the first African American to be serve as a director at General Motors.

“These types of discussions emphasize why today’s young generation should act on their responsibility to get involved in the democratic process. It is up to them to continue building a better nation”, said Koroma. Both speaking events were held in the United South high school library and were coordinated by U.S.H.S. Library Media Specialist Griselda Gonzalez.

Black History Month commemorates the significant events and achievements of the African-American population throughout history.
