Laredo, Texas: Centeno Elementary School students invited Texas A&M International University student athletes to join them as they recognized National School Lunch Week. This year’s theme was “Get in the Game with School Lunch.” The event emphasized the importance of eating healthy foods that are offered daily for free at all UISD campuses.
“If you work hard, listen to your teachers, and live a healthy style, you will accomplish your goals,” said Kayla Merriman at Centeno Elementary School event. Merriman is a TAMIU softball athlete who is also studying nursing at the campus.
“Our school lunches are healthier than ever, with more fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, and less fat and sodium” said UISD Superintendent of School Roberto J. Santos. “National School Lunch Week is the perfect time to celebrate all of the healthy options we’re serving each day in our schools.”
For the month of September, the District’s Child Nutrition Department served over 700,000 lunches to students.
The federally-funded National School Lunch Program provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students every day. The program requires school meals to meet federal nutrition standards like offering fruits and vegetables every day, serving whole-grain rich foods, and limiting fat, calories, and sodium.
The TAMIU athletes gave free posters to all students at the campus and invited them to all their home games.
