Laredo, Texas –– The Board of Directors of the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) announces the 15th Annual Asthma Screening & Education Program to be held on Saturday, September 20th from 10:00 a.m.-1:00pm., at Mall Del Norte near Dillard’s Entrance. A proclamation will be presented by Webb County Judge Danny Valdez and City of Laredo Mayor Raul Salinas at 10:00 a.m.

This annual event is made possible through a collaborative effort between the Area Health Education Center, Dr. Gladys Keene, Dr. Jane Unzeitig, Doctors Hospital, Laredo Medical Center and Laredo Specialty Hospital. “Our partners’ commitment and dedication to the well-being of our community is remarkable and it certainly has made a difference in the lives of many individuals in our community” expressed Julie Bazan, Executive Director of AHEC.

Through these collaborative efforts, children and adults will receive free asthma screening and education during this event. Screenings will be done on a first come first served basis.  Individuals interested in this service will be administered a short questionnaire, they will do a simple respiratory test for adequate screening and their  results will be reviewed and explained by one of the allergy specialists present at the event.  If the test results suggest a person might have asthma, nasal allergies or exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, the person will then be referred to their family doctor for further diagnosis. The screening program takes approximately 15 minutes and it is offered at no cost.

The Area Health Education Center of the Mid Rio Grande Border Area was founded in 1993 by the University of Texas Health Science Center and a group of community leaders to address the growing need for health care professionals and academic resources in Laredo, Webb County and surrounding areas. Since then, AHEC has remained active in the community and continues to promote programs that help to improve the health and quality of life for the community.
