American Association Game Recaps for Tuesday August 12th

baseballLaredo 11, Grand Prairie 4

Laredo scored ten big runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally from a 3-1 deficit and beat the Grand Prairie AirHogs, 11-4. The win by the Lemurs was their fifth in a row and gives them a 2 ½ game lead over the St. Paul Saints in the chase for the wild card. Laredo’s 2-3-4 hitters of RF Denis Phipps, 2B Travis Denker and 1B John Alonso went a combined 8-for-15 at the plate with five runs scored and four RBI. Laredo SS Devin Goodwin had two hits, including a home run, and four RBI. Lemurs reliever Michael Shreves improved his record to 4-3 on the season with the victory. Shreves went two innings giving up an earned run on a hit.

Quebec 5, Fargo-Moorhead 3

 Quebec 1B Balbino Fuenmayor belted a two-run home run to cap a four-run eighth inning rally as the Capitales of the Can-Am League came from behind to defeat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, 5-3. Quebec LF Matt Helms had a pair of hits in three at-bats while 3B Josue Peley chipped in with his third home run of the season. Capitales starting pitcher Kyle Regnault tossed eight innings en route to his fourth win of the season. The southpaw allowed three earned runs on six hits and fanned six batters. For Fargo-Moorhead in defeat, 3B Ronnie Bourquin went 2 for-3 with a home run and drove in all three of their runs.

 Winnipeg 6, St. Paul 4

 In a pivotal matchup between the top two teams in the North Division, the Winnipeg Goldeyes defeated the St. Paul Saints by a 6-4 final. With the victory, Winnipeg pushed its lead back to four games in the North over St. Paul. Goldeyes 3B Jake Blackwood led the offense going 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored. Winnipeg CF Reggie Abercrombie chipped in with two hits, a run scored and a RBI and RF Ryan Pineda hit his fourth home run of the season. Goldeyes starter Nick Hernandez collected his ninth win of the season as he went eight innings giving up four earned runs on five hits. Winnipeg reliever Brendan Lafferty pitched a scoreless ninth inning and earned his third save.

Lincoln 4, Wichita 2

Lincoln scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead for good as the Saltdogs downed the Wichita Wingnuts, 4-2. Lincoln CF Jon Gaston and RF Brian Joynt each hit home runs in the contest while SS Mike Gilmartin and 2B Luis Nunez both scored a run. Saltdogs starting pitcher Kevin McGovern tossed a solid six innings of baseball to pick up his third win of the year. McGovern allowed two earned runs on seven hits and struck out six hitters. Lincoln closer Marshall Schuler gave up a hit in the ninth inning but held on to collect his 29th save of the season. Schuler is now one save away from tying the league record for most saves in a season.

Amarillo 9, Kansas City 4

 Amarillo brought the offense to the park tonight as they banged out 17 hits en route to a 9-4 victory over the Kansas City T-Bones. Sox RF Derek Perren went a perfect 4-for-4 at plate with a double and two runs scored. Six other Amarillo batters had two-hit games, including LF Joe Weik who had a 2-for-4 night with two runs scored and a RBI. Amarillo 1B Andres Rodriguez and DH Kyle Nichols each drove in three runs and CF Jason Martin hit his sixth home run of the season. Sox hurler Matt Larkins notched his sixth win of the year as he allowed three earned runs on six hits in six innings of work. For Kansas City in the loss, LF Bryan Sabatella had two hits.

Sioux City 5, Gary SouthShore 3

 The Sioux City Explorers stayed red hot as they won their fifth game in row in a 5-3 decision over the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Sioux City received good production from up and down their lineup as eight of the nine hitters collected at least a hit. Explorers 2B Andres Perez and C Dillon Usiak each had two hits in the game with Perez scoring a run and Usiak driving in one. Sioux City starting pitcher Patrick Johnson tossed five innings and tallied his seventh win of the season. Johnson allowed two earned runs on three hits and struck out five Gary SouthShore batters. RailCats RF Drew Martinez was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a RBI in defeat.

Sioux Falls 7, New Jersey 6 (12 Innings)

 Sioux Falls 1B A.J. Kirby-Jones singled home C Kevin Dultz with the game winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning as the Canaries won 7-6 over the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League. Kirby-Jones was terrific tonight at the plate as went 4-for-5 with two walks, a run scored and a RBI. Sioux Falls CF Chris Valencia chipped in with three hits and two RBI and DH Brandon Jones drove in three runs. Canaries reliever Josh Giles earned the victory as he tossed a scoreless inning giving up a hit and a walk. It was Giles’ first win of the season.
