Laredo CBP Officers Seize More Than Five Tons of Marijuana at World Trade Bridge

LAREDO, Texas –Determination, alertness and skill exhibited by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Laredo Port of Entry this week showed that no nut is too hard to crack as they discovered a load exceeding five tons of alleged marijuana hidden in a commercial shipment of walnut cookies.
“Our frontline officers are to be commended for their effective application of targeting, inspection skill, and experience as they seized one of the top five narcotics loads in the history of the Laredo Port of Entry,” said Joseph Misenhelter, CBP Port Director, Laredo. “This seizure underscores that the drug threat remains quite real and our CBP officers are ever vigilant and committed to keeping our border community safe.”
The seizure occurred on Thusday, July 10, 2014 when CBP officers working at the World Trade Bridge referred a 2001 Ford Sterling tractor hauling a manifested shipment of walnut cookies for a secondary inspection. During a dockside examination, CBP officers discovered 9,277 bundles containing a total of 10,524 pounds of alleged marijuana intermingled within the commodity. The estimated street value for the marijuana is $8.4 million. CBP officers seized the narcotics and tractor trailer.
CBP’s Laredo Port of Entry is part of the South Texas Campaign, which leverages federal, state and local resources to combat transnational criminal organizations.
