Laredo, TX (Webb County) – A traffic stop by a Webb County Sheriff Deputy Thursday morning on southbound Interstate 35 led to the seizure of more than $213,000 in cash, sheriff’s officials said.
The deputy was patrolling Interstate 35 when he stopped the 2005 Jeep Cherokee for a traffic violation at the 21 mile marker. As the deputy was proceeding with the search, he noticed the money was concealed in soap boxes.
Although arrests may be forthcoming, the case is being investigated for money laundering.
Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar said Thursday’s seizure is an ongoing effort to help eradicate illicit money off the streets and, as a result, hinder drug-related activities.
“We are taking strong preventive measures to ensure that illegal money does not end up in the wrong hands,” Cuellar added. “This seizure is an indication of the hard work our deputies are doing to get this dirty money off our streets.”
