Laredo, Texas –– The Board of Directors of the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) announces the start of a two-day FREE Health Careers Camp for high school students from Webb and surrounding counties. The camp will be held on Monday, March 10th and Tuesday, March 11th, 2014 from 9 am to 1 pm. at the UTHSC Laredo Regional Campus, 1937 E. Bustamante St., Laredo, Texas.
The goal of the two-day camp is to expose students to career choices in the medical field. The camp will also provide them with an opportunity for interaction with practicing health care professionals and the program includes presentations that highlight careers in medicine, nursing, dentistry, nutritionist, EMT and others. Students attending the camp will also receive information about future programs that can help guide students in pursuing their educational goals. “This is an exciting time for AHEC because through this camp we are able to link students to health career choices and highlight role models in the medical field” reported Ms. Julie Bazan, Executive Director.
The Area Health Education Center of the Mid Rio Grande Border Area was founded in 1993 by the University of Texas Health Science Center and a group of community leaders to address the growing need for health care professionals and academic resources in Laredo, Webb County and surrounding areas. Since then, the AHEC Board of Directors has developed a menu of programs appropriately designed for students from the elementary level through the college level to create a continuum of programs to promote health careers. Each year, the programs serve over 5,000 students.
