(Laredo, Tx)- The Read Across America Cat-a-Van tour made its first national stop at United ISD’s Muller Elementary on February 25th. The tour is the result of a joint effort between the National Education Association (N.E.A.) Texas State Teachers Association (TS.T.A.), and national sponsor Renaissance Dental. The mission of the tour is to promote literacy and good oral health in elementary schools across the nation.
The heart of thecelebration was in the school gym, which commenced with a pep-rally and musical performances by some of Mullers’ most talented Pre-Kinder and Kinder students. After much anticipation, students were treated to a visit by beloved Dr. Seuss characters, The Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2. The program was high-lighted by a recitation of Dr. Seuss Cat in The Hat, courtesy of Mr. Greg Johnson, Executive Committee Member for the N.E.A. Mr. Johnson was followed by KGNS –TV Anchor Ann Hutyra, who recited Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham. A parade was held after the recitations, followed by more readings by local celebrities in the classrooms.
Muller Elementary also received a $500.00 donation from the N.E.A. Read Across America program along with library books and Dr. Seuss hats for their students. Read Across America is the N.E.A’s signature literacy program. It was created 17 years ago and made possible by Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Random House Children’s publishing.
