SEVERE WEATHER PRECAUTIONS FROM THE CITY OF LAREDO

lightspoliceCourtesy Xochitl Mora,

Laredo, TX – – The City of Laredo Health, Fire and Police Departments (CLHD) want to inform the public that Laredo should see a temperature drop to around 33 degrees around 4:00 AM tonight. There may be slight freezing rain causing roads, bridges and overpasses to become slick. By tomorrow afternoon, temperatures will go up.

Please pay close attention to your local weather forecast as conditions will vary significantly across Texas.  If the cold weather ensures we urge the public take the following —-Cold Weather Precautions:

 ·         Listen to weather advisories and follow any precautions provided

·         Follow all police and traffic rules and precautions (Laredo Police Department issues a road safety alert)

·         Monitor your food intake and physical output and maintain a regular diet to help your body better handle the severe weather conditions.

·         Hydrate – Drinks with caffeine, sugar and alcohol take longer for your body to absorb and do not hydrate as well.  Water is usually the best choice.

·         If you go outside, wear appropriate clothing that will adequately insulate you from the cold and provide protection from the wind.  Please make sure to wear hat and mittens when you go outside.

·         Dress in layers to better facilitate regulating your body temperature.

·         Older adults, those in fragile health and smaller children can be more readily affected by the cold than the average adult, remember to take all medications as prescribed by your doctor but ask if there are any special precautions for cold weather.

·         Check on loved ones and neighbors, especially those in fragile health, preferably by telephone.

·         Pets can be greatly affected by the cold and should not be exposed longer than they have to be, provide added protection against wind and cold air (keep inside if possible, protect and provide plenty of water and food, call Animal Care and Control for more questions 717-5762).

·         Check heating units (improperly operating/damaged heating units can release carbon monoxide gas),  test flashlights and communication systems

·         Never us generators, grills, camp stoves, gasoline or charcoal-burning devices inside your home, basement, garage or near a window.  Make sure you have installed a carbon monoxide detector (and test it) in your home to alert you and your family to this “silent killer.”

·         Drive slowly anytime there are hazardous conditions (rain, ice, road construction) and follow all traffic precautions and wear appropriate car safety belts/restraints
