Trautmann Elementary Nabs First Place Trophy in City-Wide Contest

(Laredo, Tx)-Congratulations are in order for Trautmann Elementary students who
earned first place in the 21st Annual Borderplex Directory Recycling
Contest. The contest challenged our local public and private schools to see
which could collect the most outdated phone books for recycling. This year,
34 campuses collected a total 19,508 phone books, and Trautmann Elementary
emerged as the top contender among UISD schools with a whopping 1,365 phone
books. According to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the
total number of books collected by all of the schools saved 398 trees,
163,867 gallons of water 77.25 cubic yards of landfill space and 95,979
kilowatts of electricity.
Mayor Pro Tempore Juan Narvaez presided over the awards ceremony, which
was held in city hall chambers on November 1, 2013. “I think it is extremely
important that we honor our children for their efforts in collecting the
phone books because there is a real impact to our local resources and
environment”, said Narvaez.
