TAMIU Students Study Hazards to Become First Responders

tamiutamiuCourtesy Steve Harmon,

(Laredo, Tx)-Some 46 Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) College of Nursing and Health Sciences’ nursing students (and future first responders)  are continuing a  required two-day certification course at TAMIU conducted by a specialized team from  the Texas A&M Engineering Extension (TEEX).  Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) Training helps first responders learn how to manage medical events that involve any of these agents.

While the bulk of the training is face-to-face, it also involves the use of state-of-the-art mannequins who can mimic real-life patient emotions, traumas and behaviors to better enable students to respond appropriately in CBRNE situations.  Completing this two-day certification is a requirement for all senior TAMIU Nursing students to graduate.  This is offered as part of NURS 4522 Community Health Nursing, Learning Objective: Practice collaborative skills in conjunction with the interdisciplinary team in order to provide comprehensive care to populations and communities experiencing complex needs including natural or man-made disasters.
