All Students From Elementary to High School &

Their Parents Invited To Help Bring Awareness To Bullying

(Laredo, Tx)-In honor of National Bullying Prevention Month, PILLAR (People with Ideas of Love, Liberty, Acceptance and Respect) will be hosting an anti-bullying event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on October 29, 2013 at the Uni-Trade Stadium located at 6320 Sinatra Parkway.  The event will be free and open to all students from elementary to high school in our community.  All parents are invited to attend for free as well.

PILLAR is a non-profit organization comprised of professional counselors who help people of all ages who may experience emotional trauma due to bullying/victimization from others, or have suicidal ideation or seek supportive services to reduce the negative impact of these circumstances.  PILLAR services are free to individuals.

“We need to bring more awareness to the issue of bullying because it’s a serious problem that causes great pain to many of our students,” said Manny Sanchez, PILLAR representative and anti-“boo”llying event coordinator.  “Bullying happens in school and it interferes with a child’s learning process,” he added.  Sanchez went on to say that bullying also happens out of school and that bullying should not be a fact of life for any child.

Sanchez said the event will allow all students and their parents to take a closer look at bullying as it can take many forms.

“While there is physical and verbal bullying, there is even nonverbal bullying and cyberbullying,” Sanchez said.  “Everyone has to do their part in identifying these forms of bullying.  And we’ve also got to send the message that there are ways to help stop all these types of bullying because it creates an atmosphere that is unhealthy for everyone.”

PILLAR will be inviting guest speakers from their counseling services program to open up the topic and inspire kids to stop bullying together. There will also be school performances presented to keep the mood alive.

Additionally, all students who attend the event will receive 10 community service hours with a certificate of participation included.
