Alexander Student Contributes to UISD’s Anti-Bully Campaign

(Laredo, Tx)-National Bullying Prevention Month is a campaign held during the month
of October. In conjunction with its district-wide anti-bullying activities,
the UISD Discipline Management Department-Positive Behavior Facilitators
worked with Chelsea Iruegas, a junior at Alexander High School to support
her anti-bullying project.
In an effort to earn her Gold Award from the
Girls Scouts of America, Ms. Iruegas developed a creative and fun activity
that reinforced the district’s policy against bullying. Her four day
campaign invited students at UISD campuses to take a illustrative approach
against bullying.
From October 7 to October 10, students at campuses across the
district wore the anti-bully attire proposed by Ms. Iruegas. On Monday,
October 7th, students wore neon colored shirts to indicate a”Too Bright to
Bully”message.
On Tuesday, October 8th, students dressed in dark pants and
shirts to share the “Black Out Bullying” message.
Wednesday, October 9, was ” Help Encourage and Respect Others (H.E.RO.) shirt day, for which students
wore their favorite “Superhero” shirt. The campaign concluded on Thursday,
October 10 with students wearing their favorite sports team shirt to spread
the message “Be a team player and speaking out against bullying”.
A correspondent from the United Insider asked Ms. Iruegas about the
origin of her idea. “In order to earn my Gold Award I was asked to come up
with a project that would make a positive difference for students and our
community.
I decided it would be a good idea to create a unique campaign for
“Bullying Prevention Month,” said Iruegas. I want to thank Ms. Annette
Perez, Ms. Melissa Lozano and all of the UISD campuses who helped make my
project a success”, she concluded.
