LISD Graduates Awarded Millions in Scholarships

(Laredo, Tx)-Emily Guerrero, a graduate of Cigarroa High School, will soon be on her way to the University of Texas atArlington to major in music, with scholarships to cover her tuition. Guerrero began her search for scholarship opportunities with the assistance of her high school counselor at the beginning of the school year. With scholarships from the Vidal & Lucila Memorial Scholarship, LISD Scholarship, LULAC, Alpha Delta Kappa, Carlos Macias, and the Top Ten Percent Scholarship, the aspiring musician is preparing for collegelife.
Every year, seniors in Laredo Independent School District’s four high schools rack up millions in scholarship offers. This year’s Class of 2013 set high standards collectively earning close to $7 million in scholarships andgrants.
The amount students are offered is often a point of pride and even a friendly competition among schools, with record breaking totals announced during scholarship nights atrespective campuses.
This year, LISD boasted a total of $6,738,671 million in offers and awards across Martin, Nixon, Cigarroa and Early College High Schools with more than 80% increase from previous year.
The money includes everything from athletic scholarships to awards from local organizations and generous institutions.
The Early College High School, Laredo’s only exemplary high school campus, brought in the most dollars, with 90 college-bound seniors getting close to $3 million. Nixon High School seniors followed close behind with LISD’s largest graduating class brining in $1,991,310 million.
Martin High Schools graduates pulled in a total of $1,687,361 million. Cigarroa High School students brought in $767,100.
LISD’ high school counselors were very proactive in helping their students receive scholarships. “I advise all the counselors alike to encourage their students to apply for as much as they can. They may not be awarded everything they apply for, so they need to explore all the possibilities,” said Director of Guidance and Counseling Rosina Silva. “Students should not limit themselves and should seek assistance. They should search the Internet and community resources. This year was a perfect example of how diligently our counselors are working for their students.”
Laredo ISD’s Counseling Department website dedicates several pages to scholarship information and includes links to other information sources. Students can gather information about financial aid, state, federal and campus based student aid programs, scholarship application tips, scholarships interview tips, and information about local, state and national scholarships that are available. Students are also encouraged to research and plan early and visit their school guidance counselors for more information and assistance.
