(Laredo, Tx)- Samantha Rangel, Nixon High School 12th grader, was recently named a Region One ESC 2012-2013 Child Find Artwork Contest winner.   Rangel’s artwork has been selected to represent Region One’s Child Find Program.

Hundreds of entries were received for the annual Region One ESC Child Find Art Contest.  Winners were chosen in the elementary, middle, and high school categories. Rangel was one of four high school students from Region One whose artwork was selected to represent Child Find Program.

“I was very surprised when I won.  I put in a lot of hard work,” said Rangel. “I was very proud of my project and was very optimistic.  When I drew it, I got into it and was proud of the outcome.”

Each year, the Region One ESC Child Find Art Contest attracts the brightest and most talented artists that local school districts have to offer. The annual event sponsored by the Region One ESC Child Find program, a component of the Region One Educational Special Education Program, organizes the art contest and promotes the winning artwork for the official Child Find Program.

When given the subject matter “Helping Families Making Connections” Samantha went right to work. “Ms. Debbie Goldberg inspired me and I jumped right into it,” said Rangel.  “I thought about the subject matter for a while and then it hit me.” Rangel created her artwork using mixed media.  Her winning pencil and paint artwork depicted the hand of a baby holding onto its mother’s hand.

Rangel was encouraged to enter the contest by her art teacher Ms. Goldberg.  Samantha is a very talented, creative and gifted in art,” said Goldberg.  “She thinks outside the box.  She has interesting solutions to all art projects assigned to her.  We are all very proud of Samantha.”

The winners artwork will be displayed in the Child Find Brochures and Child Find Posters as well as displayed on the Region One ESC website-Child Find section, posters, and other promotional items throughout the year.  These items are distributed throughout the Region One area, in schools, and communities.  All winners receive art supplies and their very own calendar depicting the division winner’s artwork.

Region One ESC serves 37 school districts and 9 charter school systems in the seven county areas of Cameron, Hidalgo, Jim Hogg, Starr, Webb, Willacy, and Zapata County.
