Two Martin High School students have been named All-State Band members and will perform during a state-wide conference.   Travis Elias, son of Moises and Sonia Elias, and Eduardo Arredondo, son of the late Jose and Sonia Arredondo, are members of the Martin High School Band and were selected to participate and perform with the Texas All-State Band in San Antonio, on Saturday, February 16, 2013, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as part of the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention.

The students were both chosen for this honor through a competitive process held this year across the state at the district, region and area levels.  Their band directors are all members of the Texas Music Educators Association, an 11, 000 plus member organization headquartered in Austin.

Elias plays the French Horn and is a freshman first year All-Stater.  Arredondo plays French horn and is a sophomore first year All-Stater.  All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive.  Over 1, 200 students are selected through a process that began with over 60, 000 students from around the state vying for this honor to perform in one of 13 ensembles (bands, orchestras, and choirs).

The competitive method begins throughout the state in auditions hosted by 28 TMEA Regions.  Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument, from this ranking, a selectgroup of musician’s advances from their region to compete against musicians from other regions in seven TMEA area competitions.  The highest-ranking musicians judged at the TMEA area competitions qualify to perform in a TMEA All-State music group.  These All-State students will participate in three days of rehearsals directed by nationally recognized conductors during the convention this February.

“This is a prestigious honor for any aspiring musician and I am extremely proud that these two skilled musicians have advanced to the All-State level so early on in their high school career,” said Martin High School Band Director Bobby Castro.

Martin High School Band Directors are Head Director Bobby Castro and assistants Miguel Aguiar, JoseCalderon and student teacher from Texas A& M Kingsville Victor Moyeda.  Elias and Arredondo are also students at the Vidal M. Trevino Magnet School where they are taught by Bobby Lopez.  The two students are both products of Christen Middle School and were under the direction of Band Director Rosario De Leon.
