(Laredo, Tx)- UISD Board Member Ricardo “Rick” Rodriguez, pictured left, recently contributed funds to the United South High School Model United Nations Club students to attend the upcoming National Model United Nations Conference that will be held at the United Nations in New York from March 6-9, 2013.  The group of students have been selected to debate issues on Equatorial Guinea which is the only Spanish speaking country in Africa .  The Model United Nations Club (also known as Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events.

Topics include: international relations, diplomacy, and the agenda of the United Nations.  Students role-play as diplomats representing a nation in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly.  The students must research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems.  The students will be competing against students from 150 schools and over 20 countries to represent their assigned delegations in simulated committee meetings and plenary sessions. The conference provides students with an unparalleled opportunity to experience the theory and practice of international relations firsthand. Also pictured with Rodriguez is the new UISD Board of Trustee for District 5, Ramiro Veliz, III who helped announce the contribution to the students.  Each Model UN student is also a member of the United South High School Academy of Global Business and Advance Technology Magnet School .  Ms. Priscilla Munoz is the dean of the magnet school and Ms. Rosa Salazar is the proud club sponsor.
