(Laredo, Tx)Ricardo Perez, a senior at J.W. Nixon High School, has been recognized by the College Board’s National Hispanic Scholar Recognition Program. Perez was given the honor as a NHSR scholar for 2012-13 for his excellence in academic achievement and his superior college entrance exams.

Perez was among nearly 5,000 students selected from a pool of over 253,000 students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and identified themselves as Hispanic/Latino. To qualify for the program, a student must be at least one-quarter Hispanic, have earned a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher, and meet their state’s cutoff scores on their critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills on the PSAT/NMSQT.

Nixon High School students, faculty, staff, and administration congratulate Perez. “Ricardo is a fine representative of Nixon High School and LISD,” said Ricardo Alvarez, Nixon High School Counselor. “He is a fine young man who continuously demonstrates academic excellence, belongs to numerous organizations, has vision and ambition for himself and is multi-talented.”

Ricardo is the son of Francisco and Diana Perez. He is interested in pursuing a degree in accounting from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Perez’s academic achievement’s includes the Society of Martha Washington Patriot Scholar and Honor Roll. He is currently ranked first in his class. Ricardo’s extra-curricular activities include Debate, Number Sense, Informative Speaking, Class Vice-President, Rotary Interactive Club, UIL Accounting and the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.

According to Alvarez, taking the PSAT/NMSQT Test as juniors allows students to see for themselves where they rate academically in comparison to other juniors all over this state and country. For some, like Ricardo who achieve national standing, it is the time to make final selections of colleges or universities as being a National Hispanic Scholar opens the door to many opportunities. Taking a test like the PSAT is the first important step in planning for the future.

Ricardo expressed his excitement about the recognition. “It’s a great honor to receive this award. It speaks volumes of the hard work and dedication I put into my studies,” says Perez. “I am very humbled by the recognition.”
