Approximately 50 social studies teachers from Laredo Independent School District (LISD) will participate in a free workshop Monday, September 10 organized by Humanities Texas and Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

The workshop, scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to  3:30 p.m. at TAMIU’s  Student Center Ballroom, offers teachers the opportunity to work closely with several of the nation’s leading scholars, studying the U.S. Constitution and important constitutional issues in our nation’s history.

The distinguished faculty includes Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Jack N. Rakove of Stanford University, Michael Les Benedict of The Ohio State University and Gabriela Gonzalez of The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Charles Flanagan, an educational specialist from the National Archives and Records Administration, will also serve on the workshop faculty and provide participants with facsimiles of historic documents that support the teaching of U.S. history and government.

During the morning, teachers will attend dynamic lectures and presentations. In the afternoon, they will join faculty in small workshops to examine primary sources related to constitutional history.

“We are pleased to work with TAMIU and LISD in this educational endeavor,” said Humanities Texas executive director Michael L. Gillette.

“Bringing teachers together to learn from leading scholars and from each other is an effective way to ensure that Texas students continue to receive the best possible educational opportunities,” Gillette said.

The workshop is made possible with support from the State of Texas, as well as from the National Endowment for the Humanities We the People initiative. TAMIU associate professor Dr. Stephen M. Duffy assisted in the initiative.

Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, sponsors programs for the advancement of heritage, culture, and education throughout the state.
