LISD Dedicates Ryan Elementary School Library to Former Educator

The Laredo Independent School District dedicated the Ryan Elementary School Library and Media Service Center in memory of former educator, Lucila “Chila” Treviño during a ceremony last week.
Over 100 family and friends gathered together to celebrate the life, legacy, and treasured memories of Trevino, affectionately known as Mrs. T by all those who knew and loved her. LISD Board Secretary and close friend to Mrs Trevino, Dr. Cecila M. Moreno, Superintendent Marcus Nelson, Webb County Judge Danny Valdez, and District Attorney Chilo Alaniz addressed the audience and recalled fond memories of Mrs. Trevino. Also during the ceremony, the school was presented with a Texas Senate proclamation by Mrs. Celita Borchers, on behalf of her sister, Texas Senator Judith Zaffirini.
Trevino, who was a devoted educator in the public school system for 45 years began her teaching career in 1952 as a first grade teacher. In 1958, she began teaching first grade at M.S. Ryan Elementary where she taught in Room 16 for the next 39 years.
During her career as an educator, Mrs. Trevino left a lasting impact on many of her students and peers. One of Mrs. T’s former students, local attorney Marty De Llano Cigarroa, remembered the fresh flowers Mrs. T brought from her garden and the nurturing manner she had with all of her pupils. Ryan Principal Elsa Flores recalled Mrs. T’s beautiful penmanship and how her students always had the best handwriting. “She loved being a teacher and her school pride was contagious,” Flores said. “It is fitting that the library is named in her honor as this is the place where learning is unleashed.”
The Nixon High School ROTC presented the colors, while VMT instructor Bobby Lopez added to the festivities with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. Msgr. Stanley of Blessed Sacrament Church provided the invocation for the ceremony.
During the LISD Board of Trustees regular monthly board meeting in April, the Board of Trustees unanimously approved the naming of the Library in memory of Mrs. Trevino’s 44 years of service to over 1,000 students that walked through her classrooms.
The Webb County Commissioners Court also honored the educator by proclaiming September 10, her birthday, as Lucila Trevino Day in Webb County.
