Month-long list of activities includes book discussions, activities and prizes and more

(Laredo, TX )  Every Saturday throughout the month of September, the Laredo Public Library Children’s Department, located at 1120 East Calton Road will transform itself into the “scrumdiddlyumptious” world of Roahl Dahl, with the Dahlathon Reading Program.  Free and open to children ages 8-14, and their parents, four different Roahl Dahl books will come to life each week with a range of discussions, activities, prizes and more.

According to Maria G. Soliz, director of the Laredo Public Library, children and parents will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and insights about the week’s suggested reading. Children must be chaperoned while participating in the program.

“We will discuss the story through a series of questions. Ultimately, all who attend will define what message the story was trying to convey,” said Soliz.  Every book discussed is recommended literature in schools nationwide.

Activities designed to better enhance the reading material being discussed include arts and crafts projects. All art materials will be provided by the Laredo Public Library. There are no costs involved to participate, nor are there any tests or requirements for participating, other than for the children, being able to read the books on their own.

The program begins this Saturday, September 1 at 1 PM, discussing the book “The BFG” and continues for the next three Saturdays: September 8, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”; September 15, “Matilda”; and September 22, “The Witches” all at 1 PM.  There will be awards and prizes given to those who attend all four sessions.

Roahl Dahl, was born on September 13, 1916.  He was a famous short story writer who became one of the most successful and beloved children’s writers of all time.  He also wrote several screenplays.  Born in Wales to parents of Norwegian descent, he attended British schools, but never went to college, opting to go work for the Shell Oil Company instead.  He worked there for a few years, but when World War II started, he joined the Royal Air Force.  While assistant air attaché in Washington, D.C., he began writing, which after the war, became his life-long vocation.  He wrote two novels, two autobiographies, 19 children’s books and many short story collections.
