Political Power Stuggle in South Laredo Fuels Voter Turnout

Political war in South Laredo goes full blast on the first day of early voting in the Webb County Run-off Elections. Cañoneros representing two current Justice of the Peace’s Ricardo Rangel and Ramiro Veliz Jr., a Webb County Constable Ricardo Rodriguez and a Webb County Commissioner Frank Sciaraffa hit the streets rounding up over 1,000 voters. The sense of urgency with a one week only time span to pick up voters was felt throughout the day. The stakes are high as two of these public servants could be in line to be replaced (constable and commissioner) with future consequences on elections for the JP’s.
Cars lined up at the polling site carrying one, two, or three voters at a time from early morning 8a.m. till late in the evening 8p.m. neither one of the factions wanting to give in or quit. Three of the uniting political factions used a traveling transportation bus to bring in their voters in an apparent intimidation tactic that in the past has usually been used by their opponents. Day two, today is sure to bring about more drama and more votes as the political struggle in South Laredo continues.
