Laredo, TX- This year will be the fourth (4th) year Operation Lone Star (OLS) provides free medical services to people in South Texas. Next week, OLS will provide services in Rio Bravo and Zapata. Beginning July 23rd, persons can take advantage of free medical exams, immunizations (for children only; up to 18 years of age), sports physicals, vision and hearing screenings, behavioral health evaluations, blood pressure and glucose screenings, medical referrals, and preventive health education. There will be no dental and pharmacy services this year.
We encourage people from Laredo needing any of the services offered to go to the OLS site at Rio Bravo. Military physicians will be providing comprehensive preventive exams. For those persons who may need transportation to the outskirts of Rio Bravo, assistance will be offered on Monday, July 23, 2012 only. Please call (956) 795-4922 for more information on transportation assistance.
OLS also serves as a full emergency response exercise for state and local officials on disaster recovery and mass services while serving thousands of underserved and underinsured residents. It is a cooperative effort among the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), other Health and Human Services agencies, Texas Joint Military Forces, City of Laredo Health Department and many community volunteers. “Operation Lone Star provides an opportunity for people to get good, basic health care and learn what they can do to help prevent future health problems,” said Dr. Hector F. Gonzalez, Director of Health for the City of Laredo.
Disasters do not discriminate and because of efforts like Operation Lone Star we stand ready to face any emergency before, during and after it happens. For more information please contact the City of Laredo Health Department at (956) 795-4922.
