Courtesy Xochitl Mora,

Laredo, TX- Although there are still some persons being seen at Rio Bravo, the doors have closed at both Zapata and Rio Bravo for the 6th Annual Operation Lone Star (OLS).

Over 1,067 medical exams, screening services and immunizations were given with over 1,000 persons attending and 985 seen for medical care. As in the past, we want to thank the Texas Joint Military Forces and the Texas Department of State Health Services for their assistance. We also extend our gratitude in a very special way to all of the local volunteers from organizations such as the Laredo Health Coalition, Baptists Child and Family Services (BCFS), South Texas Center for Alcohol and Drug Abuse (STCADA), the South Texas Environmental Education and Research (STEER) Program, Mercy Ministries, Methodist Healthcare Ministries, South Texas Food Bank, Early Childhood Intervention- Project Niños, Ventanillas de Salud, Ruth B. Cowl, Healthy Steps, and Laredo Veterans Affairs.

We also want to especially thank Honorable Nora Rivera, Mayor of Rio Bravo, Honorable Danny Valdez, Webb County Judge and Honorable Joe Rathmell, Zapata County Judge. We appreciate the assistance provided by the United Independent School District and Superintendent Roberto Santos and Ms. Irene Rosales, RN, BSN, Director of School Health Programs as well as Zapata County Independent School District and Superintendent Norma G. Garcia for sharing Juarez Lincoln Elementary School and Zapata Middle School as the sites for OLS this year to their staffs especially both Principals.

Although OLS serves as a full emergency response exercise for state and local officials on disaster recovery and mass services, many are seen for preventive health care and many for the first time. Finally, we would like to thank all City of Laredo Health Department staff who participated, in particular Senior Incident Commander, Keila Castillo, Rio Bravo Incident Commander Dr. Oda Garcia, and Zapata Incident Commander Dr. Manuel Ramirez. As always staff responded professionally and provided quality care.
