Laredo Pony League Champions to Head to Pony League World Series

Courtesy Xochitl Mora,

Once again, a Laredo Pony League baseball team has made not only made history, but also, another trip to the Pony League World Series.  The 15 & 16-year old Colt Division Laredo team won a hard-fought battle this past weekend to earn their invite to the tournament next week in Lafayette, Indiana, where they will face powerhouse teams from throughout the United States – and the world, including: Mexico; Germany; Japan/Philippines/China and Puerto Rico/Dominican Republic.

Coached by Manola Rangel is a local CPA who volunteers his time to help develop these young players. This same exact team is set to make its repeat appearance at the tournament with Coach Rangel; last year, this team of 14 year olds was the Pony League World Series Champions.  In fact, two members of this team are making their third appearance at the tournament under Coach Rangel.

The coach stresses discipline, aggressive defense, strategic offense and above all, teamwork, to get the team to their record of 15-1 this season.  Now, it is time for the citizens of Laredo to get behind this team with those same principles and help this group of dedicated young athletes, all star baseball players at their respective high schools, including Alexander High School; Cigarroa High School; Martin High School; St. Augustine High School; United High School; and United South High School.

The team is seeking financial support to help them cover the expenses of air travel, ground transportation, meals and incidentals for the eight-day tournament.  The team will fly to Indiana next week, leaving on Thursday, August 2, 2012; the tournament runs until the next week, Friday, August 10, 2012.

For anyone who would like to make a contribution to help these young boys who are representing Laredo on an international stage, an account has been set-up for them at Texas Community Bank under Laredo Pony Travel Account #1010023507, 16U.  Any donation amount is appreciated, as the team must raise $8,000 in less than a week’s time to cover these expenses.

For more information about the team and its amazing accomplishments, please contact Rangel at 956-763-9610.
