Bookfair, photos, costume contest and donations will help fight hunger in Laredo

Laredo’s mightiest super heroes are invited to Books-A-Million on Saturday, July 14, 2012, Mall Del Norte, 5300 San Dario Avenue, starting at 11:00 a.m., to join Batman, and together, they can join forces to fight against hunger.

That day 10% of all sales with a specially-designated voucher will be donated to the South Texas Food Bank.  Additionally, Batman will be on hand taking photos, for $1 donation, against a Gotham City skyline.  Children are encouraged to come dressed in their best Batman, or other super hero costume, for a costume contest starting at 12 PM with prizes donated by the Laredo Pizza Factory; the South Texas Collector’s Expo; Cinemark Mall Del Norte and Legacy Comics and Collectibles. Join story time as stories and adventures of Batman & Robin, and other super heroes, as well, are read.  Donations of non-perishable canned goods, especially, tuna, peanut butter, fruit, and staples such as beans, rice and cooking oil will be accepted to be donated to the food bank.

“It’s not just about fighting crime,” said Batman. “Be a super hero against hunger.”

Mary Benavides, manager for Books-A-Million, is very excited for the day’s activities; especially since it will impact such an important group in the Laredo community, because their work helps the whole family, providing food to over 25,000 families in Laredo alone.

“Books-A-Million is excited to be a part of the community, helping to improve literacy and promote a love of reading,” said Benavides.  “However, countless studies show that when a child is hungry, it makes learning and memory retention difficult.  This is one super effort that together we can all join in to fight hunger and help promote reading in Laredo.”
