Laredo, TX—To address the alarming diabetes rates (1 in 3 adults has abnormal glucose levels at the health department’s services), risk factors for diabetes, obesity in children and the complications of diabetes (hypertension, heart disease, kidney and eye disease), the City of Laredo Health Department (CLHD) has developed a ten (10) week session on risk reduction and diabetes prevention activities. “We recommend all persons to get their yearly check-ups with their doctor, eat healthier and exercise. In addition, we want invite the public to join our Diabetes Education Program “Healthy Living/Viviendo Mejor” to learn about diabetes management, its complications and reduce risk factors developing into diabetes,” said Dr. Hector F. Gonzalez, Director of Health.
HLVM is an exciting interactive program that helps people learn about their health and their family’s health. Currently we are seeking sixty (60) persons to enroll in the fourth cycle. What is very unique about these sessions is that it focuses on the family and community at large who are at risk of diabetes. One person cannot change by themselves; we need the whole family and community to adopt healthier habits. HLVM helps persons take control of their chronic disease or risk factors through learning healthier choices. Through self management and risk reduction classes, cooking lessons, fitness activities and peer support activities, members of the program learn to be healthier. Participants of past series of this program commented that what they learned during this program was life changing!
These free interactive classes are being offered to diabetics, their family members and/or persons at risk of developing diabetes.
