Laredo, TX—From April 21-28, 2012, the City of Laredo Health Department (CLHD), in partnership with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), will observe National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) and Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA). NIIW-VWA is an annual initiative by the United States-Mexico Border Health Commission (USMBHC), US Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and as well local and state health departments along the US/Mexico Border. This year Joint US/Mexico activities are being conducted with an inaugural event in Laredo, Texas on Monday, April 23, 2012 10 am at La Posada Hotel.
Immunizations remain one of the pillars and most effective, safe and cost effective public health measure against very serious vaccine preventable diseases. The call is to assure all routine and timely vaccinations are given by providers to protect infants and children up to two (2) years of age. We take this opportunity to remind parents and other caregivers to vaccinate their children, starting at birth, against vaccine-preventable diseases following the recommended immunization schedule. VWA is an annual effort of all the countries in the Americas to promote immunizations and for us on the Texas/Mexico Border it highlights the importance of cross border vaccination coordination and cooperation.
