LISD One Act Plays advance to district competition

The Laredo Independent School District shines the spotlight on Nixon, Cigarroa, and Martin High for sweeping the local UIL One Act Play Competitions. The young thespians are rehearsing for the next level of the district competition on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. in the Student Activity Center. Nixon High will perform at 5:00 p.m., while Cigarroa High takes the stage at 6:00 p.m., and curtain goes up for Martin High at 7:00 p.m. All three high schools won “Best Actor/Actress” awards for their recent performance at the zone level among many other honors.
The One Act Plays are brief theatre performances meant to highlight acting abilities among peers. Students must perform to the best of their talents and remember challenging dialogue. Competitors usually take a two act play and condense it into a one act play all while trying to maintain its literary merit. To prepare for the competition, students practiced daily since February, 2012. The Martin High School One Act Play cast performed “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, under their direction of Karol Batey, with the Best Actress for Zone Two, Lisa Martinez. Nixon High School staged “The Elephant Man,” directed by Jose Flores with the Best Actor for Zone One, David Barrera. Cigarroa High School, under the direction of Cynthia Ramon, presented “The Miracle Worker,” with the Best Actress from Zone One, Alondra Perez.
Nixon High One Act Play Director Joe Flores is extremely proud of their results.
“There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the fruits of your labor, and these kids deserve every accolade they receive. I am proud to be there sponsor and take part in this great achievement and we have high hopes for the future,” stated Flores.
LISD invites all the public to support the theatre arts on April 4, 2012 at the Student Activity Center at 4:00 pm.
