TAMIU Student Delegation to Canada for International WorldMUN Conference

This Spring Break, a group of 11 Texas A&M International University studentswill travel to Canada to participate the World Model United Nations Conference (WorldMUN), the most diverse college-level model United Nations Conference in the world.
Taking place in Vancouver from March 9-18, WorldMUN simulates the United Nations and international governmentalbodies such as the World Health Organization, the ASEAN Regional Forum and government cabinets. Participants represent countries, organizations or leaders and debate pressing international issues. It attracts more than 2,000 college students from more than 60 countries each year.
Aaron Gangi, senior political science major and president of the TAMIU delegation’s student organization, Model United Nation Society of South Texas, said he looks forward to attending the Conference for the second time this year.
Gangi, who attended WorldMUN’s Conference in Singapore last year, said the delegation is excited to represent TAMIU at the youth summit.
“It’s an amazing experience and that’s the reason one would want to go again,” Gangi said, “It’s also a humbling experience because you meet people from everywhere.”
The TAMIU delegation has prepared for the Conference this semester, researchingpressing world issues such as the militarization of the Arctic, malnutrition, conflict in the Middle East and the European debt crisis.
“We have been doing our research individually,” Gangi said, “Personally, I have done my research through media outlets, the Internet and reading foreign affairs magazines,” he said.
TAMIU’sdelegation this year includes Gangi; George Thomas Pugh, junior biology major; Alejandro Barrera, junior, biology; María Fernanda Andrade, senior, international economics; Alvaro Aguirre, senior, political science; Leslie Cortez, junior, biology; Amanda Garza, sophomore, biology; Triana González, senior,English; Jonathan Guitiérrez, junior, political science; Yuliana Alcaráz, senior, biology; and Esther Cavazos, junior, business administration.
TAMIU students competed for delegation consideration based on an application, résumé and a personal interview. Interview selection criteria included merit, diversity and academic standing. This is the seventh year that a TAMIU delegation attends WorldMUN.
WorldMUN, the Harvard World Model United Nations, combines daily committee sessions with nightly social events. Delegates experience the host country and discuss and debate ideas from the perspective of countries they may have never visited before. Through this experience, delegates learn diverse ideas, more about other countries and issues of global importance.
