(Laredo, TX )- While most mystery novels deal with murder, the Laredo Public Library’s mystery book club, Scene of the Crime Book Club, has found new life with its members and continues to exist in partnership with the Gateway City Book Lovers Club.
“We had such an outstanding response to our mystery book club that we are contining to host both book clubs,” said Pam Burrell, adult services coordinator for the Laredo Public Library. “.”
The next mystery tome for the club is “Eve” by Iris Johansen, is about a person who helps families cope with missing children, and how she deals with the evidence related to her own missing child.
Eve Duncan’s mission in life is to bring closure to the families
who have experienced the agony of a missing child. As a forensic
sculptor, she is able to piece together bones, create a face, and bring
an identity to a child who would have otherwise gone unidentified.
Eve is brilliant, driven, and tormented—because her own daughter,
Bonnie, was taken from her years ago. But now, with the help of a
CIA agent, Eve has uncovered some startling new evidence: A man
with a connection to Bonnie that had been all but buried. His name is
John Gallo. He’s from Eve’s own past. His whereabouts are unknown.
And he might just be the missing piece to the puzzle that has haunted
Eve for years…
The Scene of the Crime Mystery Book Club will meet on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the Laredo Public Library, 1120 E. Calton Road, 1st floor conference room, to discuss this book. The book is available for check-out at the Reference Desk at the Laredo Public Library.
If you prefer books with a more inspirational message, then the Gateway City Book Lover’s Club is for you. While the club will take a hiatus for the month of December, the club invites the community to join them at their next meeting on Friday, January 13, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. regarding the book “Dead in a Ditch: Growing up in Texas and Other Near Death Experiences.” Despite the gloomy title, the story is actually a hilarious memoir by Jody Seay, who will be at the Library that evening, discussing her book and sharing the funny things her mother used to say to her and her siblings growing up that inspired her to write the book.
“‘I come from a large family. My Mother’s biggest fear was that one
or all of us would die on her watch when we were babies and then
children. As we grew up, her fear shifted a little – not just that we
would die, but that we would be found Dead In A Ditch. It was the
ditch part that always made it seem so much worse, something drug
or alcohol related, to be sure. Mother’s children crumpled up and
tossed out the window like an old beer can. ‘Where have you been?’
she would say, ‘I was worried sick. I thought you were dead in a ditch.’
This was Mother’s mantra. Humorous, beautifully written, observant,
and heartbreakingly honest … you will be entertained.’ Jody Seay
handed me this book and said, ‘I hope you laugh so hard you bust your
spleen.’ I’m happy to say that my spleen survived intact – but my pancreas
is still in a splint. Jody Seay is ONE FUNNY WRITER.” – Jerry Juhl,
3-time Emmy Award winner, former head writer for The Muppets and Jim Henson Productions
“Dead In A Ditch is the hilarious memoir of a tomboy Texan, a little…
hellion who takes every dare. Jody Seay is also a worry-wart. How many
ways in Texas can you die if you’re not careful? If the snakes don’t getcha
the atom bomb will, and in the meantime, watch out for lockjaw! A smart,
funny tough survivor of a goofy family and her own weird antics, Seay
(pronounced See) is one helluva writer and a great observer of the absurdities
and poignancy of family life in Texas.” – Robin Cody, Award Winning Author
The Gateway City Book Lovers Club book is available for check-out at the Reference Desk at the Laredo Public Library.
