LAREDO, TEXAS – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Laredo Port of Entry this week have maintained their vigilance and seized 49 pounds of liquid methamphetamine hidden in liter bottles of beer.

The seizure occurred on Dec. 7 at the Gateway to the Americas Bridge . A CBP officer referred a Mexican taxi carrying a 40-year-old female passenger and a 38-year-old male passenger, both of them Mexican citizens from Nuevo Laredo , Tamaulipas, Mexico for a secondary examination. In secondary, CBP officers conducted an intensive examination of the vehicle and discovered 12 1.2-liter bottles of beer, which weighed nearly 49 pounds. CBP officers noticed discrepancies in the bottles and ultimately found them to contain alleged liquid methamphetamine.   The street value of the alleged liquid meth would vary depending upon various factors, including final weight and purity following laboratory analysis.

CBP officers turned the two passengers over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) special agents for further investigation.

“Our frontline CBP officers continue to maintain their vigilance and this marks the second seizure of alleged liquid methamphetamine hidden in beer bottles in the past seven days,” said Sidney Aki, CBP Port Director, Laredo . “Seizures of hard narcotics like these illustrate CBP’s commitment to keep our borders safe and secure.”
