Washington, D.C. – Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) released the following statement after President Barack Obama announced U.S. troop drawdown from Iraq:
“President Obama today made the right decision in announcing he will bring more than 40,000 U.S. troops stationed in Iraq home for good and forever. I thank him for keeping his word on a promise he made to the American people several years ago and commend his work on leading our efforts to bring peace and security to the Middle East and other conflicted-regions of the world.
“Throughout this nine-year war our country has made many sacrifices. We have lost more than 4,400 troops and the war has cost our country more than a $1 trillion. We can never forget those who have given their lives in the line of duty fighting this war and we will always honor their courage, dedication and commitment to our country and its well-being. Ending this engagement in Iraq was the correct action to take.
“As we look forward to Jan. 1, 2012, when the United States and Iraq begin a normal relationship between two sovereign nations, we must ensure we take all appropriate steps for a smooth and seamless transition of operations and logistics. Iraq must now stand as a sovereign nation with a free and democratic society.
“I stand ready to support the troop drawdown should any Congressional action be needed and pray for their safe return home to reunite with family, friends and loved ones at the end of the year.”
