(Laredo, Tx)- Opening statements were made shortly before lunch time yesterday in the murder trial of Joseph A. Garcia. District Attorney Isidro R. Alaniz is the lead prosecutor on the case.
The first witness for the State yesterday afternoon was a 911 operator and the State has continued to put witnesses on the stand throughout the day, including a man that was hospitalized the night of the shooting due to shrapnel in his left ankle. Under direct examination by Alaniz, the witness stated to the court, “I heard gunshots…more than twenty”. When shown a photo of a lifeless Alberto Gonzalez, the witness began to cry and said, “I lost a friend”.
He went on to say that he almost lost another friend that night. When speaking of Carlos Garcia, the witness said, “He almost died like several times. He got shot in his back, his legs, his arms”. The eye witness went on to testify that he remembered Joseph Allen Garcia pointing a gun at his face and when asked by the District Attorney as to who was pulling the trigger that shot him and his friends, he responded, “I just remember him, seeing Joseph Allen Garcia with the gun”.
