CBP Officers at Del Rio Port of Entry Seize 3,020 Rounds of Ammunition

Courtersy U.S. Customs and Border Protection,

DEL RIO, TEXAS – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Del Rio Port of Entry this weekend seized a cache of 3,020 rounds of ammunition during an outbound examination.

The seizure occurred on Sept. 10, 2011 during an outbound (southbound) examination at the Del Rio International Bridge . A CBP officer referred a 1997 Ford pickup driven by a 39-year-old female U.S. citizen from Del Rio for a secondary examination.  During an intensive examination of the vehicle, CBP officers discovered boxes of ammunition. CBP officers seized a total 3,020 rounds of .223-caliber ammunition and the vehicle.

CBP officers turned the driver over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) special agents for further investigation.

“This an excellent find by our CBP officers and it highlights the excellent team approach CBP employs in the outbound environment including CBP officers, Border Patrol agents and state and local law enforcement,” said Michael Perez, CBP Port Director, Del Rio. “Interdicting a significant quantity of ammunition commonly used to load machine guns at the port helps reduce border violence and reaffirms our commitment to keeping our communities safe and secure on both sides of the border.”
