Illegal Dumping Nets Man 22 days in County Jail

Courtesy Monica Garcia,

The Office of District Attorney Isidro R. Alaniz reports that in County Court Two, Armando Garcia (2/2/1985) was found guilty of Illegal Dumping.  The Honorable Judge Jesus “Chuy” Garza presided over the plea agreement in which the defendant admitted to having dumped used tires along Chacota Street.

On September 4, 2009, Laredo Police received a tip from a citizen that a white Dodge truck was dumping used tires at the 2200 block of Chacota Street.  An LPD patrol unit in the area responded and arrested Garcia.  He was charged with Illegal Dumping, a Class B misdemeanor.  Because the defendant had only dumped two tires, the charge stood as a misdemeanor, however, the charge and range of punishment may vary depending upon the amount and type of items dumped illegally.

Assistant District Attorney Pedro A. Guajardo negotiated the plea agreement and stated that there is a system in place for persons who wish to rid themselves of unwanted items.  “There is no need for people to destroy the environment with their unwanted items, and those who choose to do so will be held accountable.  I hope this sends a message to the community that responsible citizens will report violations, the police will respond and those who engage in illegal dumping will be prosecuted.”

Garcia served twenty-two days in jail for illegal dumping and will remain incarcerated for a total of sixty-five days on a misdemeanor assault charge.
