(Laredo, Tx)-Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) visited four campuses and met with students, parents, staff, faculty and district administrators. He also wished them a successful academic year and discussed recent federal funding received by UISD and LISD campuses.

Congressman Cuellar visited United Middle School, J.B. Alexander High School, Dr. Henry Cuellar Elementary School and J.W. Nixon High School throughout the day.

“I wanted to be here with students on the first-day back in classes to wish them, their parents, teachers and support staff a good and productive academic year,” Congressman Cuellar said. “We must keep our schools well staffed with a focus in mind: our children’s education.

“Through my work in Congress, I will continue to advocate for the thousands of school children I represent as I look for new and innovative ways to provide the needed resources and funding for our schools in Webb County,” he said. “I was glad to visit with our future generations of medical doctors, educators, police officers, public officials, scientists and engineers.”

This week, UISD’s Cherish Center, a vocational school for special education students, opened its doors to children with severe cognitive disabilities or behavioral problems. Congressman Cuellar was instrumental in securing $3.4 million in funding for the project through the Department of Education.

Earlier this year, school districts in Webb County, including UISD and LISD, received $11.7 million in federal funding for education-related needs to retain and create education-related jobs.  The funding is part of a $44.2 million packet in federal funding awarded to school districts in the 28th District of Texas and made available through the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act.
