The Texas Commission on Jail Standards Awards 100% Compliance to Webb County Jail

Laredo, Texas – The Texas Commission of Jail Standards has awarded 100% Compliance to the Webb County Jail for the third year in a row. In the history of Webb County, in over 20 years, this is the 1st time that a newly elected Sheriff passes jail inspection three consecutive years in his first term. Beginning on June 28th the Webb County Jail received a visit from an unannounced inspector of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, who conducted a meticulous jail inspection that ended on June 30th. As a result, The Texas Commission of Jail Standards found no deficiencies within the jail facility and scored the Webb County Jail with a perfect score of 100%.
The areas reviewed within the jail facility were: Health & Food Services, Building Maintenance and Emergency Equipment, Sanitation, Supervision-Staff / Inmate Ratio, Inmate Intake and Release Procedures, Records, Inmate Classification, Inmate Discipline, Inmate Services such as: Exercise, Education, Commissary, Religious Practices, Correspondence, Telephone and Visitation, Grievances and work assignments. Other areas include the holding cells at the Justice Center that are incorporated with Judicial Courtrooms.
“We are extremely proud of the hard work and effort the staff of the jail division has contributed in making this inspection a great success. The work of the jail division is never ending as the facility is running 24 hours; the jail administration and staff have proven to be dedicated to the duties and to the community which it serves”, Sheriff Martin Cuellar stated.
Recently, in an effort to improve the conditions at the jail facility Sheriff Martin Cuellar has utilized the use of forfeiture funds to install new windows to increase observation of high risk inmates. In addition, 95 cameras were installed to enhance security operations and to prevent disruptive behavior within facility. On the exterior of the building, the jail facility has increased the lighting to the parking area which has been gated to limit access to those who are conducting official jail business.
“There is always room for improvement and this administration is aware that in order to prevent mishaps precautionary measures must be implemented. We have been fortunate in obtaining forfeiture funds that allows this administration to grow without incurring any costs to the taxpayers.” Sheriff Martin Cuellar stated.

This score of 100% is a product of the hard work and commitment of the jail staff and supervisors.
