Mayor Salinas in Los Angeles for U.S. Conference of Mayors Event

Courtesy Xochitl Mora,

Laredo Mayor Raul Salinas traveled to Los Angeles yesterday at the invitation of Los Angeles Mayor and U.S. Conference of Mayors President Antonio Villaraigosa to attend a leadership meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors.  Mayors Salinas and Villaraigosa have been partners on immigration and trade issues in the past, and Mayor Salinas was honored to be invited to help shape the mayors’ message on moving the economy forward.

Chief among the issues facing the nations’ mayor is how to make Washington understand that a default will be an unmitigated disaster for the people of Laredo and the nation as it will deliver a knockout punch to an already fragile economy.  In fact, these were Mayor Salinas’ very words when he appeared yesterday on MSNBC to discuss the debt ceiling stalemate.  The nation’s mayors’ message is that Congress and the President need to focus on jobs and infrastructure, with passage of the transportation bill serving as a very good first step.

Mayor Salinas explained that “Here in Laredo, we are lucky to have someone like Congressman Henry Cuellar that gets it. The rest of Washington needs to understand that creating jobs in the United States should be a bipartisan issue and this bill will create jobs that are building the  transportation infrastructure needed to keep our economy moving.”

Mayor Salinas returns to Laredo on Saturday.
