Groundbreaking Set For New Community Center

   It’s been some time in the planning stages but Thursday, July 28 the dream of Webb County Commissioner Jerry Garza will finally come true as county and city officials gather for ground breaking ceremonies of the new Fernando A. Salinas Community Center.  The new center will replace the current one located at the City Health Department.

            The new state of the art 1.5 million dollar center will be located at 520 Reynolds Street and is a joint venture by Webb County and the City of Laredo.  The center will consist of offices, a classroom, dining room, kitchen, and outdoor dining area.  It will also be equipped with exam rooms, a computer lab, a library, a multipurpose room, an amphitheater and a park area.

            “It gives me great pleasure to see this project come to fruition to help the residents of the area,” said Commissioner Garza.  “This center will be one that they can be proud of and will offering many needed services to improve the quality of life for the residents.”  Garza also thanks the Fernando A. Salinas Trust Fund for the generous donation of $200,000 to help make the center a reality.

            Webb County Judge Danny Valdez will also be participating in the groundbreaking ceremony and welcomes the new center.  “This community center is going to have a great impact in our community by bringing families together and providing a variety of recreational activities for the entire family to enjoy,” said the Judge.

            City Councilman for District IV Juan Narvaez thanks former city councilman Johnny Amaya for having the vision for the center and partnering with Webb County which will give residents a new state of the art community center located in their back yard.

            The ceremony starts at 9:30 a.m. and will be attended by County and City officials.  The public is invited to attend.
