After 13 years: A Capital Murder Fugitive is Captured by the Webb County Sheriff’s Office& U.S. Marshalls in Mexico

Laredo, Texas (Webb County) – On Thursday, July 21, 2011 The Webb County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative Division in conjunction with the U.S. Marshalls apprehended a wanted fugitive in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The fugitive, identified as Jesus Servando Lopez of 32 years of age, is wanted on a 1999 warrant of arrest on capital murder charges stemming from a homicide in Cameron County. The homicide occurred after a drug deal went bad and the suspect, Servando Lopez, returned for his victim and shot him three times and then allegedly dumped him in a neighboring area of Brownsville.
The Criminal Investigative Division along with the Intelligence Unit of the Webb County Sheriff’s Office initiated the investigation after receiving information that Jesus Servando Lopez was hiding in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The Intel Unit was successful in identifying and confirming the whereabouts of Lopez in Mexico and immediately involved federal agents of the U.S. Marshalls office to coordinate the capture and extradition of the Lopez to the United States. Upon crossing the border and arriving in Webb County, Jesus Servando Lopez was transported to the Webb County Jail where he was held in lieu of no bond.
“The capture of Servando Lopez is a prime example of how important and effective communications with state and federal agencies are essential to keeping our communities safe. This sends a message to those who think that they can commit crimes and flee to Mexico – You can run, but you can’t hide” stated Martin Cuellar.
